D & D Encounters: Vol 10 Zombie Dogs and Walking Bones

Having survived the mushroom men this week our group was back up to near full strength with the Warden rejoining us.  It turned out to be a good thing, but at the same time this week’s fight ended up significantly easier simply because the Druid has good eyes.  Of course the Rogue and Warlord were sitting at zero surges.

Our cast

“Lyndy” the Rogue
“Andy” the Druid
Sey the Warden
Hawthorne the Bard
Alec the Warlord

Leaving the lab the party could hear the screams of Fayne as the Spellsword carried her deeper into the labyrinth of caves.  Following them down a steep ladder the group found themselves in a vast pit area strewn with the corpses of the lab’s experiments.  The stench of death surrounded them, and in the shadows they could hear the skittering of insects, and perhaps something more.

Moving slowly through the gloom the Warden and Druid came to the edge of a deeper pit, twenty feet below darkness made a void.  Cracking a sunrod Andy tossed it down and peered closely at the piles of dead that lay at the bottom.  Then with a curse he stepped back and yelled.

“Undead below, I can see their unnatural auras.”

Down below skeletons began to rise, and some beastly thing covered in rotting flesh stood and shook itself like a dog.  On the far side of the pit the sound of crackling flames erupted, and from the fire strode a skeletal form, its cloak caught and fire danced upon its bones, orbs of the stuff dancing at its boney finger tips.

A huge group of the undead and not a single cleric or paladin to be seen.  Which meant no turn undead to speed up the slaying.

With astonishing speed the zombie canine darted forward and then even more amazingly leapt up the wall.  As it landed at the top it spun and bit into the Warden.  The creature’s speed was amazing, luckly it was neither bright nor very strong.  With great concentration Hawthorne began throwing magically enhanced insults at the creature.

This was by far my best night as far as rolls went.  Rolled a natural 20 off the bat, which thanks to a magic staff of mine gave me an extra d6 in damage.  A bard sending off 21 damage in a single hit is a fairly impressive display.  I’d end up doing it twice more during the night.  Which pretty much made me MVP.

In rapid succession the beast and several beetle like creatures that had crawled up the wall were sent to their deaths.  Meanwhile the skeletal mage had begun launching balls of flame across the chasm, igniting Sey as he stood as the bulwark against the undead hordes.

The skeletons continued to clamor at the wall below, their boney hands clawing at the rock in a vain attempt to climb.  Jumping down the Warden brought his war axe to bear. He was followed rapidly by Lyndy, who deciding his handy crossbow wasn’t enough, drew his blade and darted forward.

Meanwhile Andy had begun a little game with the flaming skeleton.  Using his thorn whip he’d knocked the creature to the ground, every time it stood he struck again, juggling the creature until it dropped off the cliff and exploded into a pile of bones.

Other then the Warden constantly getting set on fire we didn’t take a single hit and took out the enemies with ease.  It really was the easiest fight we’d had since the initial bar fight.  Overall a great fight.

Next week is the last encounter, our final fight with the Spellsword, and hopefully our chance to find out what’s hidden in hat secret room we started this all to find.  Wish us luck ladies and gents.
